Tesla boss Elon Musk said on Twitter late Sunday that he and Google co-founder Sergey Brin are friends and denied reports that he was involved in an affair with Brin's wife, Nicole Shanahan.

Musk's tweets come after a Wall Street Journal report, citing unnamed sources, said he engaged in a brief relationship with Shanahan.

The article said the affair prompted Byrne to file for divorce from Shanahan earlier this year and ended the tech billionaires' longtime friendship.

Dismissing the report, Musk tweeted: "Sergey and I are friends and were at a party together last night! I've only seen Nicole twice in three years, both times with lots of people around." Nothing is romantic."

Tesla and Google, whose print company Alphabet Inc., did not respond to the authors' requests for comment outside regular business hours.

Reuters could not immediately reach Byrne or Shanahan for comment. Byrne's attorney declined to comment to the WSJ, and Shanahan did not respond to the paper's requests for comment.

Byrne filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences," the Journal said, citing records filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court. Reuters was not able to independently determine whether divorce papers had been filed.

In its report, the WSJ also said Byrne directed his advisers to sell personal investments in Musk's companies after learning of the affair.

The paper said it was unable to determine how large that investment was, nor if any sales had been made.

The Wall Street Journal noted that Amdtne responded to the authors' request for comment on Musk's Daniels report Otis Day of Regular Business Horses.
