CHANDIGARH: A vendor in Chandigarh, India is giving away free chickpeas to people who take the COVID-19 booster dose, NDTV reports.

Sanjay Rana, 45, was hailed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year for a similar move where he asked people to show proof of vaccination for a free plate of Chole Bhattur.

Rana said that he is worried that qualified people are not coming forward to take jobs.

PM Modi endorsed Rana's idea in his monthly radio broadcast "Mann Ki Baat".

He said that 'Bhai Sanjay' has a sense of duty and service for the welfare of the society.

Rana has been selling delicious food on his bicycle for over 15 years.

The 45-year-old said his daughters gave him the idea a year ago.

"All eligible persons should come forward and not hesitate," said Rana.

He said that infections are increasing in the country.

"Why wait for the situation to get out of hand?"

He further said that he dreamed of serving his country since his childhood and joined the army as well.

"Now I want to contribute in another way, it gives me a lot of satisfaction," said the patriot.

Rana hails from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh. He studied till class 10 after which he took the financial responsibility of the family after his father's death.

The shopkeeper dreams of giving his daughter a good education.

“Many years ago, I too used to work here in a private company,” recalls Rana.

He said, “It was a great honor for me when PM Modi mentioned my name in Mann Ki Baat.
