PM Shehbaz urges ECP to announce verdict in PTI prohibited funding case

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to announce its "long-delayed decision" in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) banned funding case.

The prime minister made the comments on his official Twitter handle and defended his statement, adding that former prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan has been given a "free pass despite his repeated and shameless attacks on state institutions". "

"The immunity granted to them has harmed the country," he claimed.

The case, formerly known as the 'Foreign Funding Case', was opened in March 2018, while the ECP has reserved its decision since June 2022.

They also alleged that the foreign accounts used to collect the funds were concealed from the annual audit reports submitted to the ECP.

A special committee was formed in March 2018 to investigate the matter. The committee included the Director General Law Wing and two officers from the Auditor General's Office of ECP.

On 21 June 2022, the election watchdog announced that it had finally finished hearing the foreign funding case after eight long years, and reserved its decision.

The case was heard 95 times in the Commission while 96 meetings of its Scrutiny Committee were held.

During the hearing, the petitioner, Akbar S. Babar, said that he was grateful that the commission gave him an opportunity to see all the records.

"This is the best opportunity to hold political parties accountable," he added.

Among them were Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja Syed Democracy, the country's most important four and still needs to be strengthened.

He added that it is important to restore the confidence of the voters and the ECP will ensure that everyone gets justice.

CEC thanked both the parties and said that they have learned a lot from them.
